Although we should honor our veterans every day, the official day to do so this Thursday, November 11. A couple years ago I wrote the following article with great little helpers.

Update
Well, Roger got his hearing aids from the Veteran Administration, along with a lifetime supply of batteries for them. Not only did he have to go to his own ear doctor for an exam, he also had to go to clinic provided by VA to have his hearing tested. At first his claim was denied but then the VA made another appointment for him to go to one of their clinics again for another hearing test. He had gone a total of 4 times for hearing tests, but it was finally determined that a significant part of his hearing loss was due to being a Military Policeman. These clinics weren’t exactly around the block, but the VA paid for mileage, and it was well worth it! Rog was also able to get glasses and all of his many prescription drugs and over the counter supplements for free! Now there’s a money saver!
I don’t know exactly what the qualification to receive benefits are – it’s all individually based. It’s certainly worth looking into! It’s worth the trip to the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center at 4646 John R Street in Detroit, 48201, phone number 313-576-1000. Turn right as you enter and park in the blue garage (there goes your “not knowing where to park” excuse!) The Macomb County Veterans Services Department is located at 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 3 in Clinton Township, 48036, phone number 586-469-5315. No problem parking there. Not in the Detroit area? Visit www.va.gov for a location near you and more valuable information.
Employment for Veterans
Little Helper, Dana, Senior Team Leader, Talent Acquisition at Sun Communities Sun Communities Careers | Sun Communities, Inc. states that “most employers should be very open to hiring veterans because of the unique skill set that they bring. Veterans are adaptable and resilient towards change. She also noted that www.recruitmilitary.com specifically has positions geared toward veterans. Thanks Dana!

Discounts and Freebies
At first, I was embarrassed to ask if a business offered a military discount. Rog would ask but often he could not be understood so I would have to ask. Turns out there are a lot of places that do give a military discount. Here is our list so far: Buffalo Wild Wings, Firehouse Pub, Texas Roadhouse, Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse, Leo’s Coney Island, Hooters, Big Boy, Sugarbush Tavern, Ace Hardware, and Home Depot.. A little here and there adds up. We just ask and the worst that can happen is they say “no.” After all, it’s not really the money, but the appreciation that counts!
I saved the best for last! Free Meals and discounts on Veterans Day as well as tons of other little helpers for veterans, courtesy of U. S. Veterans Magazine!
