Walking is one of the best and easiest ways to lose weight and make your entire body stronger.  According to an article by Kaitlyn Pirie in “Prevention Magazine,” walking is a full body exercise.  Walking helps your heart pump blood more efficiently, lowers the risk of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

I had heart surgery in September of 2020, with a bit of a complication.  When I was discharged, my instructions were to WALK.  I was very weak when I got home from the hospital.  At first, I walked down my driveway and back to the porch and was all pooped out.  Then each day, I added a little more.  I walked to the end of my driveway, then to the end of my neighbor’s driveway and one more driveway each day.  Earlier this year I had hip replacement surgery.  I had to walk the same day I had the surgery!

Walking increases blood flow to the brain and could slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.  Walking strengthens the muscles surrounding joints so there is more support. It lubricates the cartilage, so the joints move more smoothly.  That was my problem – my cartilage was worn, and the bones were scraping together – OUCH!

Walking is good for your overall mental well-being because it reduces stress and depression.

Last, but not least, consider the break on air pollution with so many cars taking the day off so their drivers can walk to work.

Admittedly, I need to walk more.  It’s sometimes hard with my hips always hurting.  Well one hip has been replaced and one hip to go!   So what helps me to walk with my weak hips?  Supportive shoes.  The associate at the shoe store recommended New Balance 847 for me for support.    That wasn’t just a salesperson’s advice, it was strongly reinforced by my nurse at Cardio Rehabilitation after my heart surgery.

That worked out great because I have big ugly feet and New Balance has always been the brand that were most comfortable for me.   I contacted New Balance to ask what the significance of the numbers in the shoes.  Janee told my they were simply stock numbers and the best way to find the best for yourself is to look at the filters.  For example, I looked under “walking” then there they were, the 847 shoe.  Now the stock number is 847v4.  You’ll find New Balance or your own personal choice of walking shoe for a great price at Walmart.

Whew, just thinking about all that walking is making me hungry!  Of course, if I’m walking to be healthier, I want to back it up with some healthy snacks.  According to Fitness Drum, the best choices are:

  • Nuts
  • Protein Bars
  • Trail Mix
  • Muesli
  • Canned Fish
  • Fruit
  • Oat Bars
